MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN

Dear Members and Friends,

The 2010 GWS committee looks forward to serving our society and ensuring that our less fortunate members are assisted in every possible way. We would like to welcome our new committee members, Mrs. Sheila Lobo and Mr. Erico Sequeira as well as our Vice Chairman, Mr. Keith Castellino who have joined us with a lot of enthusiasm and ideas which will be of great benefit to the community. I would like to thank Mrs. Lily-anne Fernandes-Ringera, our Secretary, Mrs. Lynette Pereira, committee Member, Mr. Colin Carneiro, our Treasurer and Mr. John Fernandes, the immediate past Chairman whose dedication, support and hard work have been the driving force of the GWS committee over the past years for their continuous support.

One of our goals is to put up a home for the members who need assistance with shelter, medical and basic needs. To achieve this, a lot of time and dedication as well as support from the entire community is required.

The annual administration contribution is a minimum of K.Shs. 1,800/- per working member and this goes a long way in helping our welfare cases. Over the years, the cost of living has increased tremendously and the GWS spends between K.Shs. 50,000/- to K.Shs. 100,000/- monthly for the upkeep of these cases. For those members who wish to bank the admin contribution directly into the GWS account at Imperial Bank, Parklands branch, the account number is 544 022 9001, or alternatively cheques can be dropped at the Goan Gymkhana or Goan Institute to the attention of our Treasurer.

Christmas Sweet Cooking Class a success!

The G.O.A. held its first Goan Sweet Making and Tasting event on Sunday, November 15^th, 2009 at Vic Johnson Community Centre in Mississauga. It was encouraging to receive a huge response to this event, this proves that Goans are keen to learn and continue Goan traditions.
In preparation for Christmas, 130 adults and children learned how to make five Goan sweets: Doce de Grao, Bathk (Batica), Bolinhas, Kulkuls and Corambolas. The event was opened to children because they prepare the sweets with their mothers and/or grandmothers. It was nice to see three generations together. Flevi Rodrigues demonstrated Bathk in simple steps. The highlight of the event was Martha Patel presenting Doce de Grao, the microwave method, reducing the effort and time while not compromising the taste. We live in an environment where time is of the essence, any short cuts and tips are appreciated. Participants were also introduced to frozen shredded coconut from India. This eliminates the need to break a fresh coconut, grate and mince it. Samples of Deep Shredded Coconut were distributed, courtesy of Deep Canada. After a step by step demonstration on how to make Kulkuls and Carambolas dough by Joana Nunes, guests were invited to a hands-on session on how to fold and make these sweets.
Did you know there are more than 22 Goan sweets? Each attendee also received a recipe book which included some popular Goan sweets, a couple of Canadian Christmas favourites and cooking tips.Participants shared their Christmas traditions like preparing Kuswar (a tray of assorted sweets, fruit and nuts) and exchanging it with their family, friends and neighbours. Later everybody enjoyed a cup of hot masala tea/coffee with a sampling of all the sweets that were made that afternoon.
An array of Goan utensils was showcased; this brought back memories of Goa. Hema Pereira did an excellent job of the display and labeling the items in Konkani.
The emcee, Michelle Dias kept the crowd entertained and on their toes by asking Goan trivia questions as there were lots of giveaways to be won.
Thank you to all the helpers that made this event a tremendous success. Here is to many more Goan cooking classes!

GOA Vancouver: A Big Thank You

Dear Members and Friends,

Sam Correia, President and the GOA Vancouver Executive Committee would like to take this opportunity to thank you wholeheartedly for making this Nite in Goa 2009 a resounding success with your presence and your active participation. It was wonderful to see over 300 of you on the night and though we had our share of hiccoughs, the feedback we have received from many is very positive and underlines the fact that it was an enjoyable evening for all. We are also grateful to our many sponsors for their continued overwhelming support this year.

Many thanks go to Doris Amaral, Social Director (who kept her cool through the frantic past few weeks) and her various sub-committees for the fantastic decorations and entertainment, creating a memorable showcase of Goan culture for our non-Goan family and friends. Coral-Ann Lobo and her team put together a wonderfully nostalgic stage setting while Anne Da Silva once again surprised us with her creative table decorations. Edward Soares entertained with Portuguese songs and Doris with her inimitable Konkani renditions. Maura DaCruz coordinated our Kunbi dancers (who looked like they were having way too much fun at it) and our adorable little stars shone in their skit Parallels Possibly Who Knew? produced by Sally Mascarenhas. Tamar and her troupe provided the entertainment with their gypsy-fusion dances. The buffet was wiped out, the bar did booming sales and DJ Paul Pereira kept everyone rocking with Master of Ceremonies Doug Nazareth moving things along nicely all evening.

Among the many highlights of the evening was the Crispin Sequeira Community Service Award conferred on Cleto Dos Remedios, founder member, for his unstinted 30 plus years of invaluable service to our members and the community at large. Our young members Krystle Nazareth and Natasha Santos were proud recipients of the GOA Annual Scholarship awards for their exemplary academic achievement and their active commitment to the betterment of our community.

We were graced with the presence of luminaries for the evening, notably, Kal Suurkask - Vancouver representative of the Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Stephen Harper, Anish Dwivedi Vancouver representative of the Hon. Jason Kenney - Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism and of course our friend Suresh Makhijani Consul Consulate General of India, Vancouver. Many of those present had the opportunity to interact with Mr. Suurkask and Mr. Dwivedi, who will be advising us on the opportunities available through Government programs to benefit the GOA Vancouver and its members. In his address, Mr. Makhijani announced details on the Know India program for youth in March 2010 and the Know Goa program for youth that has just concluded the selection process this year and will run again next year. Look for more details on all these programs - to be posted on our website shortly.

some of which we have published on the site.However RadioGoa primarily
is a Radio Service dedicated in promoting Konkani Music and Goan
Culture Worldwide and we would like to keep it that way.
So to fill that void we present GoaMag, an on line magazine with social
networking where Goans can connect, meet, discuss, and search for
others with common interests or likes.Besides subscriptions to magazines
and other services within GoaMag.

A.GoaMag is an intergration of Multiple online magazines with built-in content management system,Social Networking and all the nitty gritties that come with
it.

Simply put, It will be a place where Goans will be able to connect with other
Goans around the World,Share their Pictures,Videos,Articles or perhaps talk to
each other using the PMS.Or comment on articles on the magazine or have their
own mini-blog or guestbook under their profile where Goans connect, meet,
discuss, and search for others with common interests or likes.

3.Why am I not able to see the full site?

A.To use most of the features of GoaMag, you have to register (Free Registration)
and log in to GoaMag.

This also lets you connect with other registered users and to have your own 'Personal Space' on GoaMag.

4.The 'Submit Article' link does not work for me.How do I submit an article?

A.To submit an article

(a)You have to register on GoaMag

(b)You have to send a request to editor@goamag.net to add you as author.

Once these steps are completed the Submit article link will be active for you and you will be able to edit,format or schedule your own articles.All your articles will also be available under your profile.

A.Yes, the mini-site or Mag can be customized in many ways. From setting

A.GoaMag supports dual language eg. English/Konkani (Roman).Which means you

A message from Goa Sudharop volunteer Valerie Rodrigues... .

The much-awaited 2008 update to "A Mosaic of Memories" (the Goa Sudharop Seniors e-book) has just been put up on the Goa Sudharop website. This time our youngest contributor is 12-year-old Abigail Dos Santos who has penned a tribute to her late grandmother while our senior-most contributor is 95-yr-old Raymond Fernandes who has sent in, not just one, but two articles!

Others who sent in their contributions are Ramnath Kare, Tony Fernandes, John Eric Gomes, Akshata Virgincar, Leonilde Sequeira, Smita Tamba, Bella Comelo, Damodar Mauzo, Fatima D'Silva, Vinayak Naik, Christine D'Cruz and Chandrakant Keni. Our sincere thanks to each one of them for sharing their interesting reminiscences and touching tributes.

GCO Member's Day - A Report

It was great to see the altar of Sts. Peter and Paul Church Ruwi so tastefully decorated, and the Church so packed, for the St. Francis Xavier's Feast Mass, which commenced at 10.30 am sharp. This Konkani high mass led by Fr. Gaspar Fernandes (who came specially from Qatar), was concelebrated along with Fr. Raul Ramos and Fr. Albert D'Silva. Fr.Gaspar's homily, aptly delivered with very relevant messages and lucid humour, will be remembered by all for years to come. And wow... the Choir conducted by Mr. Savio D'Souza was par excellence.

After mass, the Goans gathered in the Church compound in a joyous and festive mood to greet each other.

As the guests arrived at the Al Maasa Hall, they were offered cake and cold drink. By 1 pm the Hall was packed to capacity with almost 700 people taking their seats. The comp?res Jocelle, Mable and Christopher took charge of the proceedings and invited Mr. Vernon and Mrs. Carmen Fernandes to lead the opening prayer, which was followed by Mr. Savio D'Souza singing a Konkani song in honor of St. Francis Xavier.

The GCO General Body Meeting included a welcome by Mr. Celso Fernandes, Spiritual Director's speech by Fr. Albert D'Silva, Special message by Fr. Gaspar Fernandes, President's address by Mr. Flynn de Lima, Treasurer's statement of accounts by Mr. Alan D'Costa, and adoption of the GCO Constitution. The Returning Officer Mr. Jose Viriato Menezes conducted the elections. Mr. Anthony Lourence proposed the following candidates for the Core Committee, and all of them were unanimously elected by the House:

Mr. Flynn de Lima - President

Mr. Celso Fernandes - Vice President, General

Mr. Sebastian Almeida - Vice President, Cultural and Sports

Mr. Alan D'Costa - Treasurer

Dr. Mario de Souza - General Secretary

Mr. Baltazar Fernandes - Joint Secretary.

It was then time to enjoy... The three bands Cross Connections, GoAfrica and Human Touch played in succession, giving no respite to the dancing feet. Their melodious repertoire of Konkani, English, Portuguese and Hindi favourites saw Goans prefer the dancing floor to the food queue. Everyone was seen having a marvelous time, whilst the comp?res gave away spot prizes sponsored by Muscat Duty Free, The Golden Oryx Restaurant and the Europe Beauty Saloon. There were cultural numbers sung by Mrs. Filu Fernandes with children, in traditional Goan costumes, dancing to the Ho Manddo Goencho, etc.

Sumptuous food was served at around 2:30 pm with sorpotel and sannas being the hot favorite. The lunch was indeed tasty and there was plenty for everybody.

Prizes to the winners and participants of an earlier held Elocution Competition were given away to the young and the bright Goan kids by Mrs. Catherine Dias and her team.

Special Certificates of Appreciation were awarded to two outstanding leaders, Mrs. Matilda D'Souza and Mr. Savio D'Souza, who have been selflessly serving the Goan Community for years.

The Party continued till late evening with Cross Connections playing once again to regale the mood of the Goans, who never seemed to tire from dancing. It was actually tough getting people to off the floor as there was a time limit for the hall, and the show finally came to an end at around 6.30 pm.

Overall, the event was a magnificent success thanks to the following GCO members who worked tirelessly:
Mr. Flynn de Lima (for sponsoring the pork and for organizing preparation of the tasty sorpotel under the able leadership of Stomach chef Mr. Joachim and assistance of Mrs. Leila de Souza, Mrs. Emilia and others)
Mrs. Leila de Souza (for the splendid altar decorations which went on late into the night, and for the lovely flowers at each table in the Hall)

Mr. Sabby and Mrs. Angela Almeida (for sponsoring gifts and assisting with the sorportel preparation and the decorations)

Mr. Luis and Mrs. Maria Carvalho (for the delicious cake)

Mr. Savio Martyres (for single handedly getting his office colleagues to do the hall decorations)

Mr. Alan D'Costa (for behind the scenes help and arranging the meals from Tawoos at rock bottom prices)
GoAfrica, Cross Connections and Human Touch (for the wonderful music played free of charge)

Mr. Anthony Lourence (for sponsoring the free bus service from the Church to the Hall and for providing support to the comp?res)

Mr. Savio D'Souza and the Choir Members (for training and leading the superb Konkani choir)

Goan Association of Hudson Valley celebrate Feast of St. Francis Xavier

Peekskill ( New York ) ---On December 6,2008 , the Goan-American community of the Hudson Valley in upper New York State organized a function to celebrate the Feast of St. Francis Xavier, the Patron of the East.

The program began with a Mass at the Church of the Assumption at Peekskill . The bilingual Mass was attended by over 250 members of the community not only from Peekskill but also other cities of New York such as Yorktown , White Plains etc.

The beautifully sung Konkani hymns and the Bible reading were a joy to hear especially in this cold corner of the earth….a long, long way from the heat of Goa .

During the Mass prayers were also said for the repose of the soul of Boris Rego whose life was so tragically taken way by terrorists in Bombay .

The Goan community settled in this area, about two hours north of New York City , in the early 70’s and now comprise of about 90 families totaling about 350 individuals. About seven years ago an association was founded, namely, the Goan Association of Hudson Valley to hold community activities and ingrain into the coming generation various aspects of Goan culture.

After the Mass, the faithful descended to the large basement of the church for a get together.

The President of the Association, Mr. Louis D’Souza, in a short address outlined the aims of the associations and its future plans. He called upon the community for their continued support and informed all present that the website of the Association, www.goany.org was up and running.

He also introduced, a visiting nun, Sr. Marilla D’Souza, a sister of the Loreto community who is currently attached to the UN as sister’s congregation holds NGO status with the world body. Sr. Marilla hails from Tivim as does the president of the Association.

Later, to the beat of Western and Konkani music the members took to the floor and after wearing themselves out partook of a sumptuous spread of mouth-watering Goan dishes prepared by the members themselves.

The Association plans a New Year Eve dance as its next activity.

CHERYL BRAGANZA is a gifted artist and poet. Of Goan origin, she was born in Bombay and grew up in Lahore where her parents owned Braganza Hotel (referenced in "Freedom at Midnight" Collins & Lapierre). After studying languages and the arts in Rome and classical piano in London, she moved to Montreal in 1966. Essentially self-taught, her subjects vary from evocative landscapes, lush florals to vibrant figures of Indian women.

She has exhibited regularly and established herself as a Quebec artist with a style of her own, using
(Portrait by Steve Campbell) brilliant color and texture to express emotion.

I got some wonderful news today, just now on my answering machine ..........

I have been chosen for the MONTREAL WOMAN OF THE YEAR AWARD FOR 2008. For those of you who are unfamiliar - it's an award that is given out each year by the Montreal Council of Women, a provincial and a national umbrella organization. (I believe it is the first time a woman of Indian origin has been chosen. ) There will be an Awards Luncheon at 11.30 am at the Chateau Champlain hotel downtown on Monday, November 17th open to the public. In case you are wondering why I was chosen, the nomination letter is attached. The poem by Marianne Williamson is a tool we each can adapt for our own lives and I encourage you to absorb its powerful message.

I am a bit stunned but very happy to be recognized by this beautiful city I love and wanted to share this with you.

For Montrealers, 35 of my new works will be on display and for sale at McGill University (Leacock Bldg) noon to 9 pm on FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 21st, in collaboration with SAWA (South Asian Women's Aid-McGill ). President’s Message
During the past half year, the Goan Overseas Association (G.O.A.) has faced challenging times. Our Association has been
operating at close to breakeven from event to event. To ensure our continued existence, we felt the responsible
decision was to not host events that were projected to generate significant losses notwithstanding the benefits to be
gained.

Over the past ten years, during the summer months, the Association has organizing their largest event - Viva Goa. This
was the first year that we did not host this event. We faced many challenges in trying to host Viva Goa this year with the
most critical issue being the loss of the facility that we’ve used for the past 10 years. The Viva Goa Committee, chaired
by Seira Furtado, spent many hours in at attempt to find an alternative location. Unfortunately every location we
examined was financially not viable and we were at risk of incurring significant losses from this event.

On the positive side we found a way to celebrate World Goa Day, the celebration of which has normally occurred at Viva
Goa. The Viva Goa Committee took on this challenge in a short span of time, organized and hosted the World Goa Day
Picnic. This resulted in being the largest picnic hosted by the G.O.A. and the most successful. Given the extremely
positive feedback, we have decided to make this an annual event. It is important to note that our community continues
to support events that give the whole family opportunities to participate at reasonable costs.

The next event that G.O.A. hosted was the boat cruise on Lake Ontario. Tammy Pereira with the help of Donovan
Fernandes chaired this event. The rain we had did not get in the way of this successful event as we had record numbers
from both our Senior Young Adults and Adult groups. This was the first time that the G.O.A. included the older age
group. We seek your feedback as to whether you see this event as one the G.O.A. should continue with. Special thanks
to Tammy and Donovan and their committee members for their efforts.

We cannot conclude the summer events without mentioning the Goan Convention hosted by the Goa Netters. The
G.O.A. agreed to advertise this event for the Goa Netters on the website although we were not part of the organizing
committee. In spite of the articles and emails that have circulated after the event with respect to views on successes
and failures, I feel it is important to acknowledge that the organizers volunteered their time to do something for our
community.

One very positive outcome from the convention was the bringing of two very important and influential individuals to
town. Specifically, Mr. Eduardo Faleiro, Commissioner for NRI Affairs and Mr U. D. Kamat, Director for NRI Affairs. The
G.O.A., working with representatives from the IGO met with Mr. Faleiro and Mr. Kamat almost daily to discuss NRI
affairs affecting Goans in Canada. These discussions have resulted in several key initiatives that will benefit our
members and friends. Stay tuned for further updates on these initiatives to be posted on our website. The IGO
continues to address the NRI Goan issues as an organization on their own, and on behalf of the G.O.A. in Toronto.
Special thanks to the IGO organizing committee for the excellent work they have done to date on the issues.

In my previous communication to you I spoke about the Vision Committee findings. We have since that time addressed
many of the recommendations from our community with our Executive Committee.

The message from our community is clear – “Find ways to maintain our identity and culture”. We hear you and will
increase our efforts on this.

World Goa Day Picnic 2008

There was a hush this summer as Viva Goa was cancelled and
individuals shared their views and disappointments on this.
Having celebrated its 10th Anniversary last year, the decision
to cancel Viva Goa this year was a difficult one for the G.O.A.
to make. It was a decision based on the current financial
situation and the lack of a suitable alternate venue to hold
the popular event. The Downsview Hangar, the venue used
for the past ten years, no longer permitted groups to hold
Special Events and is now primarily a sporting facility. Since
we were unable to find another venue to host Viva Goa, we
choose to continue only with the soccer tournament but this
too did not transpire as mother nature was not on our side
with the Hangar flooding as a result of the heavy down pours
experienced this summer.

Over the past 8 years, we have celebrated World Goa Day at
Viva Goa. The Association could not let this year go by
without having some kind of festivity, where people could
come out and celebrate World Goa Day!

Over a preparation period of 3 weeks, and a committee of 9,
we organized a pot luck picnic to celebrate the 9th World Goa
Day!

Thanks to Audrey Almeida who booked the scenic Coronation
Park in Oakville for our event. We couldn’t have asked for a
better location or a better day! There was food, food and
more food! Joana Nunes had her hands full coordinating the
pot luck table. She did a stellar job ensuring everything was
properly labelled and ran smoothly! Thanks Joana for
designing the exclusive World Goa Day visors that all
committee members wore, courtesy of Mary Kay.

There were fun filled activities for the children, thanks to Judy
Barreto and her team of youth volunteers. Judy kept the kids
busy and when they weren’t participating, they had the
option of using the splash pad that was available to them. A
picnic isn’t a picnic without a good soccer game! Rosie
Barreto took care of this by putting together a few games for
those interested in kicking the ball around. There was plenty
of mixing and mingling going on and Hema Pereira kept up
the flow by organizing crowd pleasing bingo games and
ensuring that there was tea made for the entire group! One
of the Bingo prizes was dinner for two at the popular Bayleaf
Restaurant, courtesy of Mark Fernandes. Thanks to Mark for
his generosity. Finally, there was a sing-a-long for all. We had
eager, fun enthused individuals that were not shy to sing not
only English by Konkani tunes!

For having to put everything together in such a short time, I
think the organizing committee did a praiseworthy job.

Nunes, Hema and Mateus Pereira, Anthony Fernandes, Rosie
Barreto, Antonio Mascarenhas and Judy Barreto. Special
thanks to Glynis Viegas for getting us started by putting
together our informative flyer.

organizing committee of World Goa Day, it is our hope that all
those who attended had an enjoyable time. We trust that

All the recent bad press that has surrounded Goa over the past few months were forgotten about on the 6th April 2008 when the Goan community got together to celebrate all the traditional values and culture that make Goa one of the most mystical and much loved places to visit. Organised by Reuben Barreto, the son of the founder of world Goa Day, Rene Barreto, the event focused on bringing together a community that has seen its reputation for pristine golden sands and friendly hospitality stretched by recent bad press. Nevertheless, this was all forgotten when the Goan community of Harrow gathered in a church hall on a wintry Sunday afternoon to dance, sing and eat traditional Goan food. You could feel a sense of cultural pride amongst those who attended, with Goans young and old mixing with each other and enjoying a community event which is a rare sight these days.

Scattered around the walls were pictures of traditional Goan symbols as well as facts on Goan culture allowing all the Goans and non-Goans alike who entered the event to get a flavour for the Indian state and its rich history. A Goan band played background music to keep the crowd entertained, strumming out tunes from past and present. They even played some traditional Kokani music, which is the local dialect of Goa, which seemed to please the older generation of Goans who are still very much in touch with their ethnic background. No Goan event would be complete without food, which was cooked by a talented local Goan chef who made traditional food, including pilaf rice, sorpotel and fish curry.

The day was packed full of events to keep everyone entertained, including a quiz where all the questions were based on Goa, a fashion show with participants dressed in traditional Indian wear and a prize draw. The prizes were all donated by the local community and all proceeds for the event went towards the Mother Theresa charity.

One thing is clear, with all the negative press that Goa is receiving at the moment, it is going to take a determined and close knit community all over the world to remind people that this blip in the history of Goa should not detract from all the things that has made it one of the most wondrous destinations on the planet. And this was evident on Sunday when the community came out in force to show the world that the tradition of Goa was in safe hands for years to come.

RadioGoa broadcast Konkani Music and Live shows 24Hrs a Day, 7 days a week. This Radio Station is operated by Benedict a Goan NRI based in Dubai in the interest of the Konkani language and culture, so that Konkani community can tune in to our 'Mai Bhas' from all over the World.

RadioGoa started streaming Konkani Music in Dec 1997, then went by the name Goan Fenny.Which was timelimited,but thanks to the support of Konkani Lovers it has gone 24/7 Today.

Celebrating the spirit of Goa

On August 20, 1992 the Parliament passed the resolution including Konkani in the 8th schedule of the constitution, paving the way for eventual statehood of Goa. In commemoration of this occasion, associations of Goans all over the world celebrate World Goa Day on or around this date. The Karnataka Goan Association in Bangalore was formed by the Bangalore residents of Goan origin with over 1500 members. This year, the occasion was celebrated on August 25.

During the celebration, women sold colourful handpicked silk scarves- with lucky numbers on them that won some of the members exciting prizes. Ozzie Fernandes and the Mascarenhas sisters (Maya, Rhoda and Gina) set the mood for the evening with songs for the occasion. Lalitha and Fausta Pinto de Menezes, Bernadette Noronha and Antonia Vaz danced the Mando â€“ the rarely performed classical Goan dance of yester years, dressed in traditional costumes specially sourced from Goa. A delicious dinner comprising mutton xacuti, sorpotel, sannas, paneer recheado, okra caldine, avocado salad, toned down with bebinca, doce and dodol completed the grand celebration.

GOINKAR'S EASTER FUNCTION AT THE PRESBYTERY HOUSE

This time the Goinkar's Own Academy treated its members to a get-
together at the grounds of the Presbytery House on 12th April 2008.
The entire premises which wore a festive look as one walked in one
could see the tremendous effort that was put together by the
Executive Committee of GOA . Our sincere thanks to Rev Fr. Robbie
D'Silva for granting us the permission to hold this event for our
Members and their guests.

Although the official opening time was 6.30 p.m but the Executive
Committee members (of which yours truly is a part of) were at the
premises since morning to see that all the arrangements were in
place i.e. Goody bags, gifts for various games/lucky draws and set-
up etc! The members and their guests who attended this event were
extremely delighted when they saw their bags, choc a bloc with
different items. For this the GOA Executive Committee express
sincere thanks to all our sponsors, because of their support our
event was a great success.

At 6.10 the members began arriving they were presented with a goody
bag . Three categories of goody bags were put together one for the
adults which consisted an Easter gift as well as products received
from our sponsors. The other gift bag for children in the age group
of 6 and above they received an Easter Gift as well as a gift
voucher either for a meal or cake and products received from our
sponsors. The Executive Committee of GOA did not forget the little
ones ranging in the age group of 0-5 who accompanied their
parents/grandparent s they too received a complimentary goody bags
consisting of color pencils, hair bands, pencil pouch, stationary
pack, T-Shirt as well as goodies received from sponsors.

After all were seated, the function began at 7.15 p.m by our Em Cee
our very own Marshall Fernandes, Deborah Santamaria, our very able
President, welcomed all and then the fun began. The Em Cee
informed the members and their guests about the forthcoming mega
event "World Goa Day" . Rev Fr. Robbie was thereafter called on to
say a few words. Rev Fr. Robbie thanked the committee for
organizing such events that brought the community as a family
together. He also requested the GOA committee members to arrange a
visit for the senior citizens to sea view.

We started off with an "Easter Bonnet" game. Each table was given a
sheet of different coloured paper and they had to use their creative
skills…….the result was a joy to behold….and the winner was a cute
little baby, who wore a green "Easter Bonnet"! There were also two
runners-up namely Peter Almeida and Julie D'Souza. All the other
table members were also presented with a small gift.

Next on the list participants from each table were called this game
was testing the participants vocal chords (Adults), the person who
could stretch the words "Happy Easteeerrrrrr… " the longest would be
the winner, this was none other than Clifford Fernandes with a
staggering record of 37 seconds!! He won a dinner for 2 at Pearl
Continental Hotel. The children in the age group 3 to 11 were called
forward for the same game. The winners Mekail Misquita, Dominic
Dsouza and Naomi Santamaria.

A "Puzzle game was thereafter played - From the Cross to the Tomb",
here too there were 3 winners were chosen. Then came the much
awaited tombola, with fabulous cash prizes. In between, the extra
gifts were given away through a lucky draw of the invites. Finally,
a sumptuous dinner was served, which everyone enjoyed to their
fullest! This was complemented with delicious pista ice-cream.

A complimentary game of tombola "Silver pool" was announced being
an Easter Get-together for which the prizes were dinner vouchers.
Through the courtesy of our sponsors we had 9 cakes, 14 lunch/dinner
and 5 Hair cut, Pedicure, Manicure and Massage vouchers which were
distributed throughout the evening was gifts/prizes.

Some more lucky names on the invites were drawn. As well as many
spot prizes for different items produced. The most hilarious was in
reply to the question "Anyone with FALSE teeth come up…".

The GOA honored the oldest (above 70) in the crowd with gifts, and
our 40 years "RUBY" Jubilarians - our very own John and Edhina
Fernandes, got a dinner for two at the Pearl Continental Hotel.
Finally, as our Em Cee stated "All good things must come to an end",
so bidding goodnight to all, a very successful function of the
Goinkars Own Academy ended.

Baton Change at Toronto East Goan Seniors Association
A.G.M elects new Executive

The apprehensions of the TEGSA Executive turned out to be unfounded on Sunday, March 30, 2008, when 70+ members showed up to form the quorum needed for the meeting. Association formed in 2004, has 600 paid up members, and is still growing with many from all parts of the Greater Toronto Area, and adjoining cities.

In his speech of welcome, outgoing President, Al Andrade said ;

” It is really very gratifying to see so many members present this afternoon, which obviously demonstrates the interest you have in the welfare of our Association and also, if I may say, the confidence you have in your Executive”

He also noted ;
” Once again during the year, we organized some very creative activities which were well received and appreciated by the members. Thank you for your support and the confidence we enjoyed. ..”

He thanked the City of Toronto for their continued support of the Seniors Association. The City has allowed TEGSA to have our bi-monthly social gatherings at Commander Park. The Association has established rapport with city officials and can look forward to building on this relationship.

He concluded his address saying :
“ As I have always said, I had a privilege of working with an Executive that is second to none. I wish to thank them most sincerely for their commitment and perseverance. President’s Message for 2007

Its time to focus on the future and we are off to a great start! In July, the Goan Overseas Association hosted a work shop to discuss the Goan Communities’ ‘Vision and Strategic Plan for the Future’. The workshop was well represented by Goans of all ages. Excellent feedback was received. The feedback is being processed with the collected surveys. Once the results are summarized, the results will be communicated to you.

The G.O.A. Executive Committee heard some strong messages from the community and decided to get a running
start by addressing a few of the recommendations immediately. We have taken on several initiatives including
the following:

One message from the community was that the G.O.A. should build stronger ties with other Indian groups in
Toronto to increase our profile in this city. Well, we took on this challenge. During the Viva Goa celebrations
we invited Mr. Satish C. Mehta, the Consul–General of India to the function. Mr. Mehta addressed the audience and commented on how impressed he was that the Goan Community could bring together such a large group to celebrate
our culture and heritage. Mr. Mehta subsequently invited the G.O.A. to participate at India’s 60th Independence celebrations at Dundas Square in downtown Toronto. Not only did the G.O.A. attend but was extremely well represented. Our proud Goans marched through the streets of downtown Toronto in the parade and participated
in 3 of 30 dances on stage at Dundas Square. To say the least, we stood out in the crowd!

Another strong message from the community was the need to strengthen our political ties with local politicians.
Once again, we addressed this right away. The G.O.A. invited Dalton McGuinty, Premier of Ontario, to our Viva Goa celebrations. Mr. McGuinty was not able to attend but he sent a message that was presented at Viva Goa to our
Community by the Honorable Monte Kwinter, the Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services.

A further message from the community was to continue to work with the various Seniors Clubs that have formed
in Toronto to cater to our strong Seniors Members. The G.O.A. met with representatives from all the Seniors
Clubs in May, and agreed to work and partner with them in hosting several events. The partnership is working
on this and will jointly come up with several events to cater to all the senior members commencing with a Health
& Wellness Fair this year.

This is just the beginning of a great future for our community. Once the final results from the Vision Committee
are available, we will decide on what further challenges the G.O.A. should take on.

The G.O.A. hosted two important events over the past month that were discussed at the Vision workshop and
received positive support: Viva Goa which was once again successful, thanks to the strong leadership over
many years from Seira Furtado; and the boat cruise that was attended by Goans from their 20’s to 40’s and
enjoyed by all. Thanks to our youngest Executive member, Fiona D’ Silva, and Faye Aguiar for hosting this event.

The G.O.A. is listening to you and intends to follow a path that you lay. We encourage you to provide us with
your feedback as the future of this community is in your hands.

Dear fellow Goemkars,

Even as I write this note, the official machinery today announced that spring began at 8.07am. Personally I find it rather amusing and wonder how they decide the precise time that any season arrives? But anyhow, with this announcement your GOA committee will also spring into action with plans for a gamut of events where members, their families and guests will be able to get together. I am sure you are all aware that the new committee kick-started their tenure with a New Year’s Eve party which although had a moderate crowd in attendance, was very well appreciated by all those who did. We did receive a number of encouraging comments, which in turn is sure to egg us on to do better in the future. But before we embark on other activities, we would like you to take a few moments of your valuable time and answer the questionnaire attached with this newsletter. We intend to organize events in the future by focusing to a great extent, on the feedback we receive from these questionnaires. We trust and hope that your responses will be prompt.

GOA also wishes to update the personal data that we have on file for our members. Please take a moment to fill out the questionnaire on the website. Once we have all the data compiled, we intend to undertake certain steps to further energize the GOA. Needless to say, we shall share our thoughts and actions with you as we go along. In order for your committee to be successful in implementing this plan, we would highly appreciate if your responses could reach us no later than April 30, 2007.

During the course of this year, we intend to hold a Picnic. We also intend to hold either a Summer or Autumn Ball. Of course towards the end of the year we shall hold our Annual Feast celebration, and then end the year with another New Year Dance. Depending upon the response we get, we might also hold a Christmas Tree and Carol Singing event to share with each other the joy of Christmas. Besides these, we shall hold a couple of events which would involve our youth and get them interacting with each other. We urge you to encourage your children to participate. Another possible event would possibly be where the focus would be on our women-folk and activities that interest them. Needless to say we encourage suggestions.

Very importantly, I would like to take this opportunity to urge all GOAns to participate in the Annual Pilgrimage to the Shrine of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception in Washington DC in the month of September. I am sure most of you are aware that several of our members are deeply involved with IACA which organizes this event. I think we should applaud these members for their effort, by participating in large numbers. Let us not forget that not only are we Goans, but we are also part of the larger Indian Catholic Community.

Having said that I am sure most of you are aware that other Goan Associations in the US and Canada hold cultural and other events each year. Whenever convenient, if some of us could take time off to attend these events, it would foster closer relationships with these other Goan associations and the members therein. Who knows, this may encourage members from these other places to come and participate in our events. Towards this, we hope to be in communication with other Goan organizations from time to time.

On behalf of the Executive committee I would like to end this note, with best wishes to all our students as they come to the end of another academic year. Please do keep our webmaster Manuel Noronha informed of graduations this year, along with a photograph of your student, if you would like to publish the same on our web-site. Please visit our web-site frequently and encourage others to do so too.

We are glad to announce that we have received quite an encouraging response to our forthcoming Come September Ball. Just so you are all aware, based on the results of our New Year's Dance this year and the tremendous attendance at the picnic, we hired the large ball room at the Best Western Hotel for the forthcoming dance. However going by the current response, the hall is only half sold. Come on dear members, we need your continued support in order to make our Goan events really successful. Remember that the last date for responding is drawing very near. We look forward to seeing you at the Dance.

By means of this letter, I also wish to draw the attention of our Youth to the Overnight Camping Event being convened by our Secretary Rebecca. A brief overview of the origin, nature and aims

- Goan association in Lisbon, launched in 1987, following the efforts of a handful of 1st generation Goan migrants who had, for a long time, felt the need to join efforts in order to preserve Goan culture and what is now entitled “goanity”.

- The original statutes and internal functioning rules were reviewed in January 2003 but the statement of mission remained the same. Casa de Goa is a public utility non-profit institution with neither political or party affiliation nor religious option. It has an open membership, made up of Goans and their families living in Portugal or abroad and Portuguese people in some way connected to Goa

- Relevant aims – preservation of cultural identity, specially by 2nd and 3rd generation Goans; collaboration with Portuguese, Indian and other bodies interested in the research and dissemination of the cultures of Goa, Damão and Diu; promotion of cultural and recreational activities for our members and open to the public. IN SHORT: building bridges between Portugal and India.

Domnic Peter Francis Fernandes is the Internet's find. Since 2003, when he began penning his thoughts in cyberspace, he never quite stopped.

What would you say when a man in his fifties, busy at work in the hot desert sands of Saudi Arabia, suddenly discovers his talent to jot down amazingly detailed pen-portraits of the Goa that was half-a-century ago?

As he wrote, Domnic got rave reviews. His work was met with appreciative acknowledgment, and ever so many email messages telling him just how meaningful his writing was. Via cyberspace, his pen-sketches have already helped thousands understand and appreciate their own relationship with this tiny but significant region of South Asia.

Now, Domnic's labour of love takes on a paper-and-ink existence and a reality that goes beyond the virtual world.

Domnic has been egged on to write a book, and the product is in your hands. As he explains, "These articles are my personal experiences. They tell the story of the Goa I knew. You would find many set around Bardez, in the central Goan coastal area, and sometimes the narration pointedly refers to my home-village of Anjuna. But, I feel, and you might agree, these stories also paint a wider picture of far-reaching social change taking place in Goa over a half-century.

Well, it's that great time of year when we all finalize our
planning for our celebrations. An opportunity for us to
celebrate our proud heritage. The goans from Toronto
Canada send their best wishes to goans around the world
as we celebrate ¡Goa Day¢ on August 20th. As we have in
the past, we start our celebrations early as we host ¡Viva Goa¢
on July 28th. Viva Goa attracts many goans from around the
world. We welcome goans from around the world to celebrate
with us. This year we will be hosting our 10th consecutive
Viva Goa celebrations. We never believed we would get to
this milestone. It is the strong community support that
has created this success.

Once again we have designated our Viva Goa celebrations
as part of our Goa Day celebration. The goans in Toronto
strongly believe in Goan unity and solidarity. It is this
unity with goans around the world that will give us a
strong voice in times of need.

Every year the attendance at Viva Goa continues to grow.
We expect the numbers to exceed 6000 goans this year.
We use this day to celebrate our culture, heritage and proud
traditions through dance and shows, sporting events and
fine cuisine.

Celebrating Goa Day is very important as we have an
opportunity to reflect on what it is like being a Goan
while sharing this experience with family and friends.

The Goans from Toronto continue to support Goan unity and
solidarity around the world. We salute Rene Barreto who
has shown great leadership in helping bring Goans around
the world together to celebrate Goa Day. The goans from
Toronto continue to pledge their commitment and support to
the formation of an ¡Alliance of World Goa Organizations¢.

We strongly believe that the Goan community around the
world has a very important voice. People will listen to us
if we are united. Best wishes to all Goans as we celebrate
Goa Day 2007.

An eventful year has passed us by. We have had a picnic,
cultural shows, special events for different age groups,
met with a visiting MP, interacted with a freedom fighter,
journalist and author, celebrated the SFX feast and the
Carnaval, eaten good food at socials and so on.

The KGA has become such a fun association to belong to
there's always something happening. Whether born a Goan
or trying to be one (those of us who are not born Goans),
the KGA is a fantastic forum to meet like minded people,
exchange views on culture and just about anything under
the sun, just have some chilled outings with family and friends.

Most kids have gone back to school/college much to the relief
of their mommies! I know that many families went to Goa for a
break. I trust some of you tried out the new fun stuff we had
detailed in our previous issues para sailing, trekking, etc. If
you didn't, it means you don't read the
newsletter or maybe you will do it next time!!

The AGM looms ahead we trust you will attend in large numbers.
New blood will be inducted into the Committee. Some old ones
may also remain!! Together, am sure they will do wonderful things
to keep the KGA flag flying high.

This is going to be the last newsletter done by me. Your next one
will be from someone new. It has been wonderful churning this out
for you month on month but work pressures prevent me from continuing.

Hello,

In the past, there has usually been a lull in our activities post the Carnival till the AGM – whether due to the onset of Lent followed by the exam and holiday seasons or simply the perception of the new financial year “belonging” to the new Managing Committee, I do not know. Be that as it may, this time round we are going to be different – and use the gap to catch up on the cultural agenda and to cater to children and youth. In March, we had the screening of Trikal – if you missed it, please call to borrow a copy of the DVD for home viewing – and in April, the interaction with Lambert Mascarenhas. Food is an integral part of Goan culture, and it is time we did our bit to experience it the traditional way, not just the oft repeated popular dishes, the challenge being having a menu truly representative of the various sub-cultures of Goa. Elsewhere in this issue are details of a Goan Banquet being organized later this month on an experimental and limited basis, with the possibility of it becoming a regular full scale event on our future calendars. Also this month, a Goa theme party for under 12s – a first time function exclusively for the young ones. And in June, preceding the AGM to be held on the last weekend of the month, a developmental event for the Youth – read on for details.

A sumptuous sit down dinner On Sunday, May 27, 2007 at 8 pm At Hotel Park Residency, Residency Road Only Rs 350 per head The Goan Banquet will showcase the best in Goan cuisine. None of the run of the mill popular dishes we usually have, however…so no sorpotel, xacuti, vindalho, cafreal and the like. Instead, stuff many of us would rarely have had occasion to relish (if at all!), prepared by a “mesta” specially brought in from Goa for the occasion. For starters, empadinhas, apa de camarao, ressois, croquettes… Followed by caldo verde with an assortment of bread freshly flown from Goa – poios, catres, kankannas, guttlis… Main courses will include leitao torrado (whole sucklings!), feijoada, fish balchao, vegetable mergol, samarachi kodi with rice accompanied with kismur and a variety of pickles… And desserts… letria, vonn, gonss and bolo sans rival! For listening pleasure while you sit down and enjoy the spread, some of our musically gifted members promise to play and sing for their supper. An event for the Youth We have an interesting Youth Program , “What We Say” coming up on Sunday, June 10, 2007, in association with Catholic Club (CC) and Kanara Catholic Association (KCA). There are exciting Prizes and Awards awaiting the Participants. a. Open to youth from KGA, CC and KCA member families only. Two age category groups, viz upto 18 years and 18 to 25 years. b. Advance preparation on a selected topic and a presentation on June 10. - Participants will be teams of up to 5 members. - Participants may use their own resources or external help but will be quizzed by a panel of judges following the presentation. - Organisers will provide the infrastructure support via audio video hardware, and any specific aids needed. The following topics are suggested. Participants may however opt for a topic other than these subject to approval of the organizers at the time of registration. A. Topics for the 18 to 25 years participants · Poverty elimination in our country – strategy to achieve. · Child labor overview and how to deal with exploitation · “Special Economic Zone” as a route to sustained growth. · Professional women and their role in the Family · Social responsibility and the corporate sector B Topics for the under 18 years participants · Bringing our athletics and sports to international standards · Impact of HIV on the social and economic fabric of our country · Our school system vs European or US - review of relative features · School level involvement in civic activities to create interest in the future as citizens. c. AN EVENING WITH MR LAMBERT MASCARENHAS

If there’s one thing you can say about Mr Lambert Mascarenhas, it’s that almost a hundred years ago, God and Nature connived to invent him – and then they broke the mould. I’ve thought that since our first meeting at his Dona Paula home in 1972. In 20 minutes he’d convinced me that I would be an ersatz Goan until I’d bought myself a home in Goa. Last week, I re-discovered Lambert Mascarenhas when the KGA hosted him in Bangalore. And I was delighted that there were so many others who turned up to meet this grand old man of Goa. It was a very special evening. LM looked a right dandy in his casual stylish Mediterranean sartorial elegance. The years have been kind to him. Little has changed. There’s the same lateral take on whatever he was asked to comment on, the same honesty of purpose and fearlessness that has been his hallmark in public life for over fifty years. And all the while, that same irresistible, quietly wicked smile. Few public figures would have the courage to utter some of the gems he dropped into our laps. He spoke of the hoary old Goan values of honesty, decency, trust in all that was good, a love of traditions. And then he said all that had vanished. We are bankrupt of those values, he said. The rush for illicit wealth did not stand the scrutiny of such old-fashioned notions. He told us of Goa’s first Cabinet of Ministers, after the liberation of 1962. He spoke of five of the most eminent medical doctors of Goa who were elected to that Cabinet and travelled several hot and dusty hours from their villages to Panjim, in the local caminhao, to attend each cabinet meeting. Today’s leaders in Goa, he said, have more luxury cars than they can count. And they don’t particularly care who knows it. And when we asked him what we, the Diaspora, could do to help Goa – he said don’t do anything. Above all, don’t send money. It will never get to where you intended. It will be stolen along the way. But if you really want to do something, teach our young people to be entrepreneurs. Teach them to start small businesses. I couldn't figure out why exactly this would make a special difference to Goa. It wasn’t necessarily wrong but why was it particularly right, I wondered. But I didn’t challenge him, preferring to dwell instead on the bravery of a man who once suffered incarceration in a Portuguese jail for three years for the freedom of his beloved Goa and, to his fiancée’s considerable alarm, vowed never to marry until Goa was independent. I would save the contentious questions for another time. (That fiancée, whom he married within a fortnight of Goa’s liberation, was with us that evening. Dr Jolly Mascarenhas sat through it all, smiling gently and proudly at her husband of fifty years, and laughing with us at his bons mots.) Lambert Mascarenhas is 94 years old. Until last year he drove his own car through the crowded streets of Panjim. My irreverent nephew in Goa says he never discovered whether it was out of respect for the Grand Old Man or for fear of his fading navigational skills, but the traffic would part each time his jalopy appeared on the streets. He’s stopped driving now, but he doesn’t plan to surrender the driver’s seat in life: so he’s writing a new book. Not about Goa, he says, but about the universality of issues facing India.
